Give me back my pen and paper, I have had enough of computer keyboards! October 13, 2007

I know now why I am not so prolific in this blog. Electronic writing just doesn’t do it for me! First of all, I am a really clumsy keyboard user. Why, I even omit letters or type wrong letters in my OWN name! WHAT A BUMMER!

The other factor is, it doesn’t feel personal enough. A-pen-and-paper writing arrangement feels almost like a part of my own body, like my spectacles! I hate typing as much as I enjoy surfing the net, if not more :D .

You may ask how I manage to update my other blog everyday then. Well, I don’t know. There’s nothing too personal in that blog, and therefore no crying need to go organic.

As I come to think of it now, I used to be a frequent notebook freak. And ever since I turned into a hardcore surfer, I haven’t written anything in my notebook :O

So, it looks like I am in need of a Plan B there. Since I DO wanna update this blog once in a while and I don’t enjoy pounding on the keyboard (a device that hinders my string of thoughts, rather than assist it) the only way I can keep on disseminating my thoughts online is by writing on paper and then scan it and upload as images!

Ah, that sounds cool! And hopefully, it’s gonna give my blog a home-made, personal and immediate look! Not bad for a personal blog at all! :D

Yeah, might give it a cool personal feel, but SEO wise and page-load-time wise it would be a pretty bad call.
Why not write it on paper and then type it in afterwards? I do that all the time.

Otherwise you could invest in a digitizer and get some text-recognition software (like on palms where you can write directly on the screen). That would at least give you the “pen”-feeling when writing :-)

as for seo, i can’t care less as far as THIS blog is concerned.page load should not be a big issue, after all there are image-only blogs too, no?

as for writing something before and then typing it again, i tried it too! but i feel so damn lazy and it feels so stale. :D

i really like the write on screen thing. is it too expensive?

I actually write all my fiction by hand in an A4 notebook, so I know what you mean. It gives your words a more personal feel and I find it’s easier to get my thoughts in order on paper than when I’m typing. Plus there are less distractions so I’m more likely to write faster.

I think it’s a great idea, particularly if you’ll only be updating once a week or so; it’ll help your readers to get to know you a bit better. The only thing I’d say is to try and compress the scanned images before you blog them; you might get away with a couple at 250KB, but if you have 8 on the front page, it might slow the loading time.

Have you seen any digital pens, btw? They’re quite an interesting idea. I know one called the Fly Fushion is aimed more at students, but you could use it; it stores your handwriting in memory inside the pen. Connect the pen to your computer by USB and it uploads your handwriting as text! It’s not perfect (it relies on how clear your handwriting is), but even if you have to make a few corrections it’s quicker than typing it all. It’s about $80 US and I’m definitely thinking about it or a similar pen for my writing; it’d be a real time-saver. ;)

I know Wacom is one of the most respected brands in the digitizer world, but at the same time, they’re expensive as hell.

Where I live, the cheapest no-namers are around $90 – 100, and they’re pretty small – the active field of the tablet is only around 10×15cm. So it all comes down to how much you’re going to use it really – if it’s worth the cost.
